Our Community
Littleton ESD is located in a great little community just west of Phoenix. Our quickly growing city, Avondale, was first established under that name by resilient pioneers who came to the area as farmers, merchants, and cattlemen. Prior to their civic organization, the Hohokam Indians (ancestors of the Pima) built a thriving society in the area and carved out water canals for farming that are still used today.
Settlers discovered gold in Wickenburg and Prescott during the 1800s, creating a demand for commerce between Tucson and northern Arizona. Weekly shipments of supplies and people were carried by stagecoach across this vast expanse of land following the trail from Maricopa Wells to Wickenburg. Passing right through present-day Avondale, this stage trail often stopped to rest and water horses. Soon the Coldwater Stage Station was built, and Avondale began to attract other merchants until a neat little town was born.
Today Avondale, nestled at the base of the Estrella Mountains along Interstate 10, is within a quick drive of the metro Phoenix area, which provides ample opportunities for sporting, shopping, and dining. Add to that our own scenic areas for hiking, biking, and wildlife, and you’ve got a recipe to please everyone!
Not only has our community got a past, but we have a very bright future! Browse through the resources on this page to learn more about what we offer for today and how we’re preparing for tomorrow, and dream with us about our future.
