Exceptional Student Services
At Littleton Elementary SD, we believe all kids can succeed! As part of our commitment to help all students reach their potential, we offer a top-notch special education program in all grades to identify, diagnose, and serve students with special educational needs, disabilities, and/or giftedness.
Our schools freely and appropriately educate students identified with special needs/abilities in the least restrictive environment suitable for their individual needs in accordance with the federal IDEA Act. Utilizing an Individualized Education Plan, we offer educational and support services inside and outside the classroom.
Programs
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is the civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability and guarantees individuals with disabilities equal access to an education.
Child Find
Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires districts to locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities, aged 2.9 through 21, who are in need of special education services. Parents of preschool-aged students, age 2.9–5 years, can answer the following questions to assist in determining if their child may have special needs.
Does my child:
- Have trouble seeing people and objects?
- Have trouble hearing voices and other sounds, or remain unusually quiet for long periods of time?
- Have difficulty talking and pronouncing words properly?
- Move about with difficulty when crawling, walking, or running?
- Learn slowly and have difficulty understanding?
- Have trouble playing with other children or getting along with adults?
- Have other special health problems?
If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, call the Exceptional Student Services office at 623-478-5682 and ask for more information about Child Find.
Special Education
Special education services are based on the individual needs of a student through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) developed by a team of professionals including the parents and student (as appropriate). Littleton ESD provides a full continuum of services for students who are eligible under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The areas of eligibility for persons from ages 3–21, procedural safeguards notice, and other special education-related information can be found on the Arizona Department of Education website.
Special Education Records
The Littleton Elementary School District will destroy all special education records of former students who discontinued special education services, withdrew, transferred, or graduated in 2019. Parents who wish to view their children’s records, before they are destroyed, must call the Exceptional Student Services Department at 623-478-5682 no later than June 30, 2025.
